The following 3 photos of the sky have been taken near Basle, Switzerland, during a thunderstorm by night.

The first row shows the original photos, very slightly retouched, to reduce the grain due to long exposure and poor light.

The second and third row images are the result of lavish reprocessing. The second row shows the very same lightnings with a vivid color range as background, pleasant to the eyes but not very realistic. The third row shows still the very same lightnings with heavy clouds added to the background.

Catching photos of lightnings is a task that is based on chance and needs some patience. The common way to do it is to let the camera's shutter open for a given time, hoping that a lightning will occur at the right moment and at the right place.

However it will often happen that the lightning happens just after closing the shutter. When the lightning occurs at the right time, it may be partly or completely out of the field of the camera. Thus, to catch 3 good photos, you may need to take 20, 50 or even more photos.

To take these photos, I let the shutter open for 8 seconds each time. A tripod is necessary, of course. Sometimes, catching more than one lightning while the shutter is open is possible too. This happened on the 2nd photo where 3 lightnings are directly visible and another one produced some kind of halo behind heavy clouds and rain.
